Dia De Los Muertos

Day of the Dead

In Mexican culture, El Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) isn't seen as a time of mourning for those lost. It's a celebration of the loved one's life. Traditionally, families create altars that feature pictures of their loved ones, candles, decorations, and many times their favorite foods and drinks. The altars are an invitation to their loved ones who have crossed over, allowing them to join in the festivities. In the Desert Southwest Dia De Los Muertos is observed throughout the region including at one of our area's oldest landmarks, the Yuma Territorial Prison, each year The Chicano Art Collective in partnership with the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area celebrates the holiday with music, food, artists and more.
